A license plate bearing the simple inscription “P7” has shattered records by selling for a staggering 55 million dirhams ($15 million) at a charity auction in Dubai. The auction, organized by Emirates Auction, proudly claims this sale as a world record for the most expensive license plate.
The previous record was held by Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri, who spent 52.2 million dirhams ($14.2 million) on a license plate at an auction held by the same company back in February 2008. CNN has sought confirmation of this new record from Guinness World Records, but no immediate response has been received.
The proceeds from the sale will be donated to the “One Billion Meals” campaign, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE. The campaign aims to support vulnerable communities worldwide during the holy month of Ramadan. This significant sale occurred earlier this month.
During the auction held at the Four Seasons Hotel Jumeirah, other license plates were sold as well, with one fetching 2,950,000 dirhams ($800,000) and another going for 140,000 dirhams ($38,000). According to the UAE state-run newspaper WAM, the overall auction raised over 71 million dirhams ($19.3 million) for the “One Billion Meals” campaign.
